Reading Support Course Syllabus

Focus: Students will apply all reading skills in order to improve reading levels and comprehension of academic materials.
The main textbook for this course is Language. Other supplemental materials will be incorporated and will include Reader’s Journey, on-line materials, magazines, textbooks, newspapers, fiction and non-fiction books.
Daily Focus: Warm up that will help to reinforce math and or writing skills, review of homework which will consist of talking about book they are reading and daily reading skill focus.
This course will incorporate:
· Speaking and listening skills
· Use of AVID strategies, especially WICR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and
· A novel study with an emphasis on non-fiction and the implementation of literature circles.
· Reading Strategies through fiction and non-fiction texts.
· Sustained Silent Reading each Friday using a book of student choice.
· A writing component including quick writes, journal entries, and class work as assigned.
This course is based on Georgia Performance Reading Standards which can be found at http://picasso.cobbk12.org. This course is an academic course that will count towards quarterly honor roll, annual promotion and/or retention.
Grading Procedures:
Class work 40%
Tests/Quizzes 20%
Presentations/Projects 30%
Make up work policy: Students are responsible for gathering missed assignments for excused absences. Students will have the same number of days to make up missed assignments as the number the number of days absents. Students are responsible for scheduling a time to make- missed tests and quizzes with their teacher.
Homework: Homework will be required to read at least 15 minutes nightly and record information on a reading log. This log will be collected on Fridays and accounts for 10% of the student’s grade.
Late work: No late work will be accepted.
Supplies needed: Students are required to bring their Language workbook, writing utensils and notebook to class daily. Students must be prepared with a personal reading material for Sustained Silent Reading each Friday.
Students will follow the school-wide behavior management plan.
