All students received a May Newsletter today in class.  I have attached a copy here.  Download may_newsletter_2008.doc

Many students volunteered to bring in items and those items are circled on the newsletter.  These items are due to class by May 13th.  Thank you very much for your donations for making this a fun activity to review volume and surface area.

We will have a test tomorrow covering Direct Variation.  Tonight's homework is a fruit punch task to help students create a proportion.  Download Math6Unit8FruitPunchTask.doc

All students created a graphic organizer and should review the pages in the book to assist them with setting up ratios and proportions and solving for the constant in y=kx equations.

Have a nice evening.

We have been working hard getting ready for the CRCT.  You should have noticed students working on CRCT practice questions for homework.  We have also been finishing up the last two units on Direct Variation and Probability.

Today we talked about Theoretical Probability and the difference between Theoretical and Experimental Probability.  Students should have written this website into their agenda for practice:

http://argyll.epsb.ca/jreed/math7/strand4/4201.htm

They can practice various situations on this website which may help them better understand the difference between these two types of probability.

For Homework, students should finish up problems on page 424 in their workbook.

Have a good evening!

Today we played a Jeopardy game in class which reviewed our Unit 7 - Solids.  Since we were unable to finish all questions during class, I have uploaded the game here to assist you with studying the questions.  If you bring in work showing you completed some of these problems, I will give you extra points toward your test grade :)  Download Jeopardy-Solids.ppt

Points scored by each class are currently as follows:  4th period - 54,200 pts.;p 1st period - 52,600; 2nd period - 46,400 and 3rd period - 45,800.  I have not yet added in the question on your paper so these may change.

TEST TOMORROW - study your warm-ups.  Remember all warm-ups have been actual test questions.  Re-work the problems to find any errors you may have made before.  Use the formulas by substituting the values in for the variable.  Also, complete the worksheet of word problems to assist you with practicing volume and surface area problems.

Study!  See you tomorrow.

Happy April Fools Day!  Thank you to all the student's that kept trying to fool me today! :)

Today in math we checked homework and reviewed volume formulas for cylinders and cones.  We worked some word problems to help us apply what we learned yesterday.  This work should be in your notebook where you keep your warm-ups to assist you with studying for the test.  We also continued our notes for Volume of a cube, rectangular prism and a pyramid.

Tonight's homework is page 357 in the workbook, #1-6 and #10.

Have a nice evening.  Remember, you can always practice odd problems in the book for particular concepts you are struggling with.  Look over examples in the book and then try the problems.  These problems have answers in the back and at least you can check to see if you are doing them correctly.  If you bring in problems you work on your own, showing all your work, etc.  I will give you extra credit points toward your grade.  This effort shows dedication to learning and a desire to do better in math and you will be rewarded - not only with extra credit, but with a true sense of understanding what we are learning in class.  This is NOT an April Fool's joke.... :)

Students should have turned in Pink Sheet from Friday which had them work surface area of four 3-D figures.  Also, students should have created the 3-D shapes out of the nets given to them.    Some students finished this in class on Friday, but were given the weekend to complete it if not finished.

Today we began volume of a cylinder and cone.  We completed a lab which helped us understand volume of a cylinder and derive the formula for volume of a cone (3rd period will finish this tomorrow).

HOMEWORK FOR 1st, 2nd and 4th periods is as follows:  Worktext page 381 #1-4.

Homework for 3rd period is page 578 in textbook, #1-5.

MONDAY, March 25, 2008

I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend.  We began Surface Area today.  Most students seemed to pick this up pretty well.  Students should have notes in their notebook, as well as three examples to go along with the notes.  HOMEWORK TONIGHT is to complete 10-12 on page 584 in the textbook.  Number 10 is a triangular prism which is different from the rectangular prisms in your notes.  Think about each face and how to find the area of each face.  DO YOUR BEST and come in with questions tomorrow if you have them.... GOOD LUCK!

Today we reviewed circumference of a circle in all four periods.  First, Second and Fourth period completed a hands-on activity which related the area of a circle to the area of a parallelogram.  This activity is found in their book on page 557.

Homework for 1st, 2nd and 4th period is to complete page 343 in the workbook.

3rd period did not get to this activity because we were behind on circumference, so we completed circumference of a circle.  3rd period should complete the circle activity out of their book on page 557 for homework and be ready to discuss area tomorrow.

MONDAY, MARCH 17, 2008

We reviewed circles today in class to get ready to find surface area of cylinders and cones.  Students measured circular objects brought from home to find the objects circumference and diameter.  They then were to measure another persons object as that person measured their item and compare measurements.  This was to help with accuracy in measurement.  We graphed the comparison of the diameters to the circumference using a scatter plot and noticed as the diameter increased so did its circumference.  We also created a ratio of the circumference to its diameter and then changed the ratio into a decimal.  We spoke about the pattern we saw in everyone's measurements and related this to a special number.  Not all classes have gotten this far, so we will finish tomorrow.  Some students finished their assessment and turned it in.

First period should finish the back side of the pink sheet given in class.  If they need to continue measuring circular objects to see if they can find the pattern that may be a good idea.

Most of second period got finished with the pink sheet.  Anyone that didn't finish, should complete it and turn it in tomorrow.

Third period did not finish the lab.  They were asked to continue measuring objects and be ready to discuss the patterns noted with the ratios.

Most of fourth period finished the lab and turned in the pink sheet; however, several people need to complete it for homework and turn it in tomorrow.

Have a happy St. Patrick's evening!

We began Unit 6 on Monday.  This unit develops a greater understanding of solid figures.  We currently have compared Rectangular Prisms to Rectangular Pyramids and Cones to Cylinders.  We have looked at different views of these solid figures (top, bottom, and side) to see which figures we are able to see.

We have also gone over many of the vocabulary words for this unit:

Base, Cone, Cylinder, Face, Polyhedra, Cube, Rectangle, Polygon, Vertex, Edge, Prism, and Pyramid.

We will continue to review these words as well as add to them as we progress through the unit.

DON'T FORGET:  Tomorrow is a field trip.  Please dress for success for the performance.

HOMEWORK FOR MONDAY:  Please bring in a cylinder shaped object on Monday (ex., can, container - no balls (spheres).)
