May 2008

Last Week of School!

Schoolsout2 On Wednesday, students will empty their lockers. We will provide paper and writing utensils. Students will not be allowed to bring anything to school on Thursday and Friday. Students should bring in their textbooks on Monday. If a textbook has not been turned in for your child, a notice will come home by Tuesday afternoon. This applies ONLY to my Social Studies classes.

Language Arts -

  • Mon 5/19: "Freak the Mighty" quiz; turn in Reading Journals and Chapter Posters
  • Tue 5/20 & Wed 5/21: View "Freak the Mighty" - complete Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the novel to the movie
  • Thur 5/22 & Fri 5/23: Students will write poems to their 7th grade teachers and the rising 6th graders.
  • Summer Reading: a list of suggested authors is available on the school's web page There is no book project this year, just an optional book review. The books read over the summer will count towards the 2008-2009 25 book requirement http://www.cobbk12.org/~palmer/Summer%20Reading.htm

Social Studies -

  • Mon 5/19: Monday and Tuesday students will complete activities related to personal finance. Students will start on the workbook on Monday.
  • Tue 5/20: Students will complete their first set of workbook challenges for personal finance.
  • Wed 5/21: Students will play the games they created last week.
  • Thu 5/22: Previewing Social Studies for 7th Grade
  • Fri 5/23: Student movie and end of year celebration and book signing
  • Summer Fun: interactive games, brush up for Geography Bee in 7th grade at www.mywonderfulworld.org

They worked on it in class yesterday, today, and will finish up tomorrow. Next week we'll play some of the games!

Novel Study

FreakStudents are reading "Freak the Mighty" by Rodman Philbreck in class and are keeping a reading journal.

We will plan to finish our book the week of Monday, May 12th and students will have writing assignments and a test (May 19th).

Daily Agenda: May 1, 2008

Language Arts: Students found out how Kevin and Max became "Freak the Mighty" in our novel reading in class. Students should be working on their Independent Novel Study at home (reading and working on their response to literature). Due Date is May 13.

Social Studies: Students worked on their Australia Poster aligned with an assigned standard for Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania. No homework. I also handed out study guides for the post-test on Monday. Download 6th_grade_social_studies_post_test_study_guide.doc

REMINDER: 4th period students need to bring back their signed permission forms to view the movie, "October Sky" next week during Field Day activities for the other grade levels.
