Great Job at GACS!

Thanks to Mrs. deNoyles and Mr. Chou  and Mrs Owenby for driving! There wouldn't be a math team without supportive Parents and Teachers...especially student teachers like Mr. Chou!

The Pre-Algebra rankings were not included in our folder, so we will have to get those numbers later. The competiton was keen and we are proud of all our team members!

Congratulations to Jen who place 5th and David R. who placed 20th in geometry competition!  They were competing against schools like Hoover High in Alabama and Lassiter and Wheeler here in Georgia.

We will have the Pre-algebra solutions at Wednesday's practice. I've attached the Geometry cipher solutions...what a challenging test! Especially considering you had 30 second slots to finish each problem!

What's Next

What's next for math team...That is up to our team members!

  • Wednesday we will discuss our schedule for the rest of the year.
  • We need a parent to coordinate the end of year celebration.
  • We need a parent to bring snack Wednesday.

Observation:
The teams that swept the Math Counts and GACS awards had mastered the "Tool Box" facts, and had obviously spent a great deal of time working over the problems from previous competitons. Math team is one of those areas where you "reap what you sow". The kids that take top honors have invested time in preparing for these competitons...Each one of you can do that, too! But regardless of what size trophies are awarded, the most valuable prize is the increased math skill you will always have!

Don't forget the helpful facts, formulas and tricks in the MATHCOUNTS Toolbox. Take a moment to look over the info in the toolbox and think about how useful  these facts were during competitons. If you have lost your toolbox, you might want to print off another copy by clicking here: Toolbox
This information will serve you well in future math competions, as well as future math courses.

As the Math Team year draws to a close, we are asking each student and parents to tell us what they feel would make the math team bigger, better and more fun! Please tell us your opinions!

General Information

I have approximately 12 students (4 from each grade) that meet every Wednesday morning in my room.  Our goal is to get students excited about math, to teach them strategies to attack different types of problems, to challenge them to think about math at a higher level, and to build teamwork skills. We generally have 4 adults in the room: Susie Eckert, Melek Owenby, Mr. Chou, a student teacher from KSU, and me, Mrs. Pencek.  We have snacks and have fun.

There are approximately 5 Cobb County tournaments and 2 other statewide tournaments to attend.  So far we have competed at Lassiter High School and Kennesaw Mountain High School for county meets and done very well.

I am extremely proud of my "mathletes" for their hard work and determination in mathematics!

MathCounts Competition

Congratulations to the Palmer Math Team for a job well done at the MathCounts Competition at Southern Polytech University on Saturday.  The team placed 4th in the competition.  Receiving trophies were Jennifer H., Emily H., Kelsey M., and Shane D.  Special congratulations to Shane for scoring in the top 25% to make it to the countdown round!

Also competing and scoring exceptionally well were Chase E., Daniel B., Wyatt O., Jasim M., and David A.  Way to go Palmer Math Team and their sponsors, Mary Pencek, Melek Owenby, and Susie Eckert!  (Math Team members not present: Graham H., Sydney K., and Kelby W.)
